I have trolled sauger for the last five years below Nickajack. As in any tailrace fishing, the current dictates everything. Most of our better sauger have come in the mornings just when generation begins , late afternoon is second. Sauger must be fished for as close to the bottom as you can keep your baits. I fish 6A Bombers in firetiger and brown craw most of the time , Middle Ns and 300 series Bandits will get you a little deeper. Going down stream in stronger current you may have to go to a Little Earl or a Deep Flat A Bomber. In deeper water downstream towards Burns Island a Deep N will get the bottom with current. We fish from Nickajack to well into Alabama along the channel side of Long Island. Their are really just a few crankbaits that are small bodied and deep running enough to use. Size is everything, these are my choices.
