I fish from the north bank,below Guntersville dam,and if the weather is cold and nasty,with the right current you can get some nice nice Jacks using 1/8 ounce jigs tipped with minnow.I dont paint the heads of my jigs,but would guess that a bright color would help.Be prepared to loose a whole bunch of jigs because you will have it on the bottom and lifting and dropping slowly.Most times the bite is very gentle and you will find that you will need a good supply of minnows.This is a whole bunch of fun,and them Jacks are the finnest in eating.Remember,the darker,and nastier the weather seems to be the key for me.
