Plenty of folks use brightly colored jigs tipped with a tuffy minnow from the bank. I seem to get hung too much to have much success, but I see lots of other folks catching plenty of them with a minnow and jig. Using crawly bottoms (log perch) fished on the bottom will catch a limit of them too. When the fish are actively feeding, I have caught many sauger below Guntersville Dam with #5 or #7 shad raps. I've caught them all along the rip-rap on the south bank and all the way down past the boat ramp. Getting a shad rap hung from the bank offers little chance of ever getting it back, and at around $5 a pop it gets expensive pretty quick. It helps to know which areas have snags and which areas don't.
