Smallmouth fishing

I'll be taking a trip to fish for BIG smallmouth below Wheeler Dam and below Pickwick Dam for several days, starting this weekend. I plan on fishing the bluff areas below Shoal Creek on the lower part of Wilson too. All smallmouth will be released unharmed (circle hooks) after I've weighed them and a brief photo session. My 9 year old son wants some more photos for his "brag book". So far this year, between the two of us, he has landed the biggest largemouth, smallmouth, rainbow trout, and redfish.

I'm assuming that I will be able to navigate Pickwick headwaters just below Wilson Dam, as long as TVA is generating. I had no problem this past April or May when I went. I have an 18' aluminum bass boat with 90 HP Mercury.

Most of the yellowtails I've seen below Guntersville Dam are really small right now. I would appreciate any information on where to find bait over 3" long in either Wilson or Pickwick lakes right now. Any other tips, tactics, or areas we should try to fish would also be welcomed. Thanks in advance!
