With a lot of folks, including myself, itching for the crappie to turn on I thought you might like to hear that I managed to catch 6 keepers from the bank today. They weren't slabs, though. The biggest was about 3/4 - 1 pound, but all were legal; nine inches or longer.
I was fishing a 16th oz jig head (unpainted) with a crystal shad bass assassin under a cork about 12-18 inches deep around cover in approximately 3-4 feet of water. I know it isn't exactly a banner day of crappie fishing, but I was only out there for about an hour and didn't expect to catch anything, so it really scratched my crappie itch for today, at least. I gave 5 of them to an elderly man who was trying to get some fish for the skillet, but was only catching tiny bream. I would have given him 6, but one was barely 9 inches and I would rather let him grow a while longer.
Once again, here's to cooler temps and lower lake levels!
Good luck and good fishin'
