One thing you need to know about 1/4 in mesh nets are the mesh is made of a real light weight mono because the holes are so small. They are very easy to tear. I would recomend for your first cast net that you will be doing a lot of practicing buy a 4ft with a 3/8 mesh it will help take the abuse. After you get the hang of it go get the 1/4 inch net to keep down on your mending practice. For the majority of bait in alabama freshwater the 1/4 in is perfect mesh size to avoid gill netting. The 3/8 nets are alot cheaper as well. The heavier the better as far as weight is concerned and if you have a choice buy a net with egg shaped lead instead of bullet shaped wieghts they sink faster.
