I used to fish a popping bug behind a float, but I kept getting hits on the float. Now I use a tiny torpedo as the float. It does get tangle quite often, but you'll be surprised how many bass and bream you catch on it.
One trick is not to throw it too hard, I found the harder you throw it, the more it gets tangled. I have also tried unscrewing the rear treble hook and removing the spinner. I have cut the hook off of an old torpedo and replace the good torpedo with the screw eye (no spinner). This seems to work best becuase there is only one treble hook and the eye is perfect for tying on the fly, but I have lost a few good bass without the extra hook. I still use this method when I'm out and have fogotten the flyrod.
