I've been surfing some more. Looks like the Fed has allowed 13 states to increase the depredation (killing) of cormorants, as they decide on the threat to (only) commercial fisheries and aquaculture farms. Check these sites for some more info:

There doesn't seem to be an overwhelming case for any bad effects to sport fishing, although there seems to be some genuine concern with the states and many fishermen. Not to rile you up more, just seems that there hasn't been that much research done by the individual states (Alabama for sure!) And I haven't seen anything yet about solving for the damage cormorants cause to trees and such - that's a problem! These birds do carry diseases harmful to humans; droppings and spent feathers are beneath the roosting place so can disease leech to the reservoir? I havenít found that out yet.

One thing that does seem to work temporarily is loud noises around the birds. So, here's my solution: my next trip to the lake, I'm taking a bunch of brown lunch bags (sorry, I don't have a shotgun). When I see one of these birds I'm going to blow the bag up, sneak up behind the cormorant and POW! Pop the bag. Or what about firecrackers - are they legal in Marshall County? Or maybe there could be a hunting season.
