Nope, I have never trolled for stripers. When the flood gates are open and the current rolling, I am not sure if it would be possible or practical. The drifting technique is very similar to trolling since you are moving all the time. In a bigger, deeper lake like Smith, I can see how trolling might be very important. I do have a friend that said they used to troll around below the dam (with flood gates closed) with crankbaits trying to locate schools of white bass. Once they would catch a few, the would fish with grubs, etc.+
My experience has been that when they are not generating or otherwise releasing water, the fish are not feeding in schools. Trolling might work in these cases, but I usually go home instead.
Let us know if you catch 'em from the bank. I fish from the bank sometimes myself.
