Mark I fish the flats alot and right now they are
kind of slow. Once TVA brings the water up to summer
pool, the bass will start to stage on the flats. This
usually happens late April and May. I have caught some
good fish on the flats during this time frame. My primary
bait is a 3/8 oz black and blue jig fished on 17 pound
line. I also use a black Zoom pork chunk. What you
need to concentrate on is water 5 to 7 feet on the back side
of channel. Key fetures are small patches of grass.
Each year, I find the grass harder to find but there
always is a little. A trick I learned several years ago
was to have four or five marker bouys. As you catch a fish,
kick out a marker bouy. What you will see is a pattern taking
place. As you look back all the marker bouys will in a straight
line. This will show you the key depth to fish at.
It also will give you a good reference of where the
grass patches are. 95% of the time the marker bouy
will be very close to a grass patch. Another factor to pay
attention to is boat traffic. As you are fishing the break line
on the back side of the channel, waves off of pleasure boats will
break over the ridge off of the main channel. For some reason, fish
activity will pick up during this event. I guess the waves scatter
bait fish and in turn make the bass feed. As far as the west for dike
I do not know if it is open or not. Good luck.
