put shifter in F. if you change it during the process, you will have to remove the lower unit after you have finished the job. there is a selector on the lower unit that is connected to the shifter. don't move it, either. When you remove the lower unit, the drive shaft is connected to it. the water pump is in a housing on top of the lower unit. remember the order you removed the screws, replace impeller, put the housing back on, stick lower unit back in place. before you begin, turn your prop with the shfter in F, N, and R. It should click in F, spin freely in N, and resist in R. make sure it does the same when you replace the lower unit. i'm not exactly sure about whether it needs to be i F when you remove the lower unit (it may not matter at all), but it is important that you do not change gears with the unit off of the motor. ask the parts guy when you get your pump.
