While I had a houseboat docked at a local marina, I put out brush under my slip. Instead of putting out single trees, I would tie cedar trees end to end with the tip of the trees pointing toward the surface. I would tie a cement block to the butt of one tree and with the help of a friend I would lower it in the water, tie on another tree and keep tying trees until they reached over 40 feet deep. It isn't too hard to control. With the trees pointing up, it is easier to keep from getting hung up and easier to pull a crappie out of. If the crappie prefer water depth from 1 to 40 feet deep, you'll be ready!! The lake I do this on isn't smith, but I'm sure it will work there also. Good luck!!!
