Most winter time fishing with a fly rod for warm water fish will be subsurface ,crawfish and minnow patterns will usually work when the water is cold. Stripers can be caught on top when they are chasing shad using clouser minnows or any streamer that looks like a shad. The trout below smith can be caught on small caddis and midge imitations tied in size18s or smaller.Sunny winter days usually bring out hatches on the tail water below Smith Dam providing the turbins are off.If you have the time there will be a fishing show at the B and A warehouse in Birmingham from noon to five on Jan 12th .Most of the fly shops in the area will have booths there ,plus some speakers on the fly fishing opportunities in the State.
