as with most things you get what you pay for (generally). what reel depends on what kind of fishing you do. i prefer a spinning reel for most everything. i own Penn reels ($45-80 range), and have used/abused them for several years with no breakdowns. they have a very solid drag system, which i need for stripe fishing, but a relatively slow retrieve. if im casting bucktails or sassy shads, i use an ambassadeur 5500 ($60 range), also with a good drag and very dependable. these reels are also very rebuildable if the need arises. there are smoother reels with faster retrieves etc, but these are real workhorses. if i was going to try and save money, i would buy less rod and more reel.
