Remember bigger number - black crappie. Black crappie normally have 7 or 8 spines on their dorsal fin whereas white crappie normally have 5 or 6 dorsal spines. Black crappie are more rounded and have irregular blotches. White crappie are more elongate, and the blotches of white crappie often look like parallel vertical bars. Hybrids of the two are common in Lake Weiss.
