Just before the HEAVY rain on wednesday we were catching quite a few nice crappie. After the rain, only small crappie for me. Water temps today ranged from a low of 63 to a high of 75 degrees. Lots of carp in the shallows on Flint, along with the gar, and lots of small (under 9") crappie. Almost all of the small crappie I caught were showing the dark black spawning display (both black and white crappie), but I have my doubts if these small crappie are capable of actually spawning. Don't know how old a crappie has to be before it CAN spawn.
In any case, it looks like the major spawn may be either over on Wheeler or at least nearing the end. Someone tell me I am wrong and how to keep catching the slabs! (smile)
Today I fished from the hwy31 ramp on Flint creek all the way to the I65 bridge and the Allen hole. Only caught 2 keepers and quite a few small males. Oh well, shellcracker season is just starting! (grin)
