I've been in the tailraces numerous times the last few weeks. Normally by now the smallmouth are in the tailraces but they are behind this year. They are beginning to hit better on areas down river and should pick up any day. For trophey smallmouth in the tailraces, live bait is good. However, I prefer a 3/4oz spinnerbait. I use natural colors with a split-tail trailer and drift them over the rocks in the current. A tube, a sassy-shad or a white bucktail also works great in the current. Cranks and spinnerbaits worked over rocks below the flood gates produced several over 5 and 2 just over 7 for clients last year. I don't do a lot of live bait fishing but we normally catch our own and it normally works better than the store bought shiners. Good luck and as Lance said, be very careful up there.
