Hey sethook, I can sympathize with the rod just shot off scenario. I bet I have lost at least 5 rods and reels during my 30 years of fishing in a similar scenario. The last one a fish took off with actually floated for a while and I was able to snag it with another pole and get it back. Caught the fish too, a gar about 30 inches long. When the gar are in I have to pay close attention becase they have gotten more than one of my poles. They just shoot off and there it goes, kersplash in the drink. I have snagged and brought in a rod or two that I reckon another fisherman lost in the same fashion.
