I have caught four fish with lampreys on them in my lifetime. Two of them were at Weiss Lake and two on the Tennessee River with one being at Guntersville and the other on a bream at Wilson. They all were about 8 inches long. You will see them mostly in the early spring when the fish are moving up out of the deeper and cooler water but to my dismay the bream I caught was in October. I had a conversation with Steve Smith (Alabama Fisheries Biologist) and he said that they were not to uncommon to Alabama but did not cause any great mortality in game fish.
The lampreys in the Great Lakes are a different species (Sea Lampreys) and are there in greater numbers to spawn. Maybe this will help answer your question. If not you may e-mail Steve Smith off of the Alabama Game and Fish home page.
