Lead does not like moisture. That is the reason for, once you've had molten lead blow up in your face, you'll take more precaution, mentioned by Allen.
One small drop of sweat from your brow in the melting pot can become very exciting.
I think Alex has mentioned using a not painted jig head. Most lead, like wheel weights, rubs off on every thing. I have 5 lb ingots of plumbers lead, which I believe is the some of the best, which I add tin to the lead which makes it harder and all so tin makes for a good corrosion resistance. Jigs that have the tin hold the paint much better than just lead.
