1) They can be caught any time of day, although I did catch more of them towards the later afternoon.
2) They have a harder mouth, less for a hook to hang onto to. I have no problem catching them with the standard gold Aberdeen crappie hook.
I think jacks are more active in dark hours. Next ones you catch shine a light in their eyes, they glow like a cat's eyes. I've heard people will shine the water with a light to look for their eyes glowing.
