Because the current is usually strong it pulls the line downstream but the weight keeps the bait down and drags it downstream. I don't start reeling until my line is say 40-50 yards down. Facing straight out, I will cast upstream at say, my 1 o'clock and then let it drift to my 11 o'clock position. There will likely be others fishing like that down there that you can ask for advice. That's how I learned, another fella down there taught me what to do.
You may catch catfish, if the drum don't get in the way. Cutbait or shad guts would be the choice.
With the weather cooling and the water cooling the stripes should be more numerous by the end of this month.
One other piece of advice: go heavy on the tackle if you can. I use 17 pound line, no leaders, with an Ugly Stick and Ambassadeur 5500. I really should be using the 6000 I have tore apart for more line capacity, as I lose alot from hangups.
