Gate removed from damaged lock at
A miles-long backup of barges on
the Tennessee River should begin
clearing, soon now that a damaged gate has been removed
from a lock at Wilson Dam.
The main lock at the dam has been closed since Aug. 3,
after a barge became entangled in the lift gate and
lifted it off its tracks.
An auxiliary lock was opened after the accident, but it's
smaller and operates much slower than the main lock.
The main lock can lift or lower a cluster of nine barges
in about 45 minutes.
The auxiliary lock requires about 75 minutes to move a

to use a temporary gate on the main lock to clear miles
of backed-up barges above and below the dam.
Full repairs are expected to take eight weeks.
