I don't fish Wheeler but I do fish Guntersville. Obviously in a small boat you can't get out to the big water(nor should you), but you CAN catch bass in shallow water this time of year...best if you can find some heavy cover (weeds or wood, docks etc) and some stained water. The last two summers I have been able to catch a few on the G pitching a 6" motor oil Jelly Worm, 1/8 oz sinker, 10 lb test, spinning gear, to docks in 2-3 feet of water in the back of a slough, and you gotta travel a 1/2 mile to even get to water that's 7 ft deep or more. And thats when the sun is high, there's no place else for these fish to go. Sometimes the finesse gear is the way to go...go read the report on the recent FLW T on Logan martin and how they caught their fish in the dog days...the winner was pitching stright tailed worms to docks, shallow.
