Lake Catouatche and Lake Salvador are just a few minutes south and west of New Orleans. Bayou Segnette State Park is on Hwy. 90 west of New Orleans proper about 15 minutes and connects you to both of the aforementioned lakes. I've mostly just fished for bass there, but you can catch plenty of other things (at least before Katrina). Hurricanes have a way of wiping out freshwater fisheries for a time until all of the saltwater recedes. There are a bunch of places around NO that you can catch redfish and specks on shrimp, cocahoes, spooks, etc. Didn't ever really figure out when to do what with the brackish water stuff, but to answer your question there's plenty of fishing to be done in that area both fresh and saltwater. The Venice area is good really for anything that swims, but its about an hour and a half south of NO.
