The Mercury EFI engines (The Optimax Line) are a joke. The two strokes are too dirty for EPA standards so the manufacturer (nothing against Mercury, Evninrude did it too with the FICHT's) engineered the engine to run extrememly lean at the low end of the power band. In otherwords, the engine is designed to go lean under 2,000 RPM's, or wake speed. for those who are not familiar with how these things work, that means that if you run the engine at under 2k RPM's for too long (we're assuming this is on a bass boat, where you are always under 2k RPM's), the combustion chamber will overheat due to the run lean condition and the pistons will be destroyed, the cylinder will be scored and beaten beyond machining specs, the lower end will be damaged from debris, and you will spend $5,000 to replace your powerhead.
Wow. This is what I was concerned about. Anyone have problems like this with Optimax?????
