I like Shimano and Okuma. I have never had reason to buy a Pflueger, but I hear good things. Obviously, casting will be similar with many spinning reels. However, a positive retrieve (instant anti-reverse) is usually on the better reels. And the drag systems.... well, I have had my heart broken before, but it won't be for the same reason twice. The drag system is a big part of what you are paying for. I would NOT recommend a rear adjustment drag in spite of the apparent convenience. A front loaded drag on the spool is the ONLY way to go. You get what you pay for, and if you fish often, you will wear out a cheap reel.

Everyone makes cheep reels, including Cabelas, Shimano, and most others. Like somebody already said, you get what you pay for. I like the Shimano Symetre as my new favorite for $80. You can buy from Bass Pro or Cabelas.

Good luck!
