Well first off there is trout fishing, maybe not Montana quality but below Tims Ford Dam in Tennessee (45 miles away from H'ville), you can get into some pretty good rainbows and browns. There are also rainbows stocked below Smith Dam near Cullman.
If you want to make the transition to bass easier, you might oughta try wading the flint river say near Oscar Patterson road. The moving water might be comfortable enough to your tastes, while giving you a great start at understanding bass behavior. If you start outfrom a boat on the big G you might get overwhelmed, hell I grew up here and Guntersville can still be a tough lake to really understand.
