Well, it looks like the sauger fishing will be tough until this water gets back down. However, I did get a chance to go Saturday before the river became unfishable. We started out a Diamond Island @ Savannah and only caught 3 dinks. We made the run to the Pickwick Dam @ 11:00 and were discouraged to see 8 gates about 3/4 open, but we still caught a few. The water was rough but you could hide from inside the old lock (and inside the new one when a barge wasn't going through it). We worked up and down the walls and ended up with 10 keepers and quit around 4:00. The largest was around 17" which was a big male. The others were all females absolutely full of eggs. While we were there, TVA opened those 8 gates all the way. This made the fishing extremely difficult if you were anywhere but up inside the locks. We did manage some keepers down the long lock wall that almost touches the bank on the West side of the river, but it was tough though because you had to deal with 3 foot waves. Wore me slap out.
The fish were in 30-35ft. of water.
The water temp was 47-48 degrees.
Lure color was red/white & red/green. No Minnows.
Current flow was 110,000 cfs @ 11:00 and
increased to 130,000 cfs by the time we left.
