The island was the site of a big battle between Indian tribes, 2 or 3 hundred years ago. I know the Chickasaw tribe was involved and I think they fought the Cherokees. There is a mound on the eastern end of the island. Last I heard, the island was owned by a private individual ( possibly a lady that lives in Madison). Also, it was in the news a couple of years back about disscusion on the feasibility of developing it with homes and a marina and such. Nothing came from that, I think it should be preserved and archelogical work done there. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble there as far as trespassing is concerned.
