Your hookup ratio will be much improved with a stinger hook. Some manufactured jigs have a long stinger tied from the jig eye. I prefer to tie a short stinger to the bend of the jig hook using fluorocarbon leader. It is better to use slightly lighter test than your standing line in order to recover the jig if the stinger hangs. Remember also: Sauger can sometimes be sensitive to the color of the jig - sometimes they will absolutely prefer a unique color and will not touch the wrong color. I have seen days when a pale orange was the ONLY effective color. The next trip it would be red, or chartruese. And it is for sure a plus to tip your jig with a live minnow. A tuffy is good if you can get them, but a shiner is OK too. The final note is that a current of flowing water is very important. Without current a sauger bite is elusive. Tight lines!
