WTL, I do not know if you are aware of this but on Kerry's site if you go to virtual tour of the Tennessee River, there is a section on history. This particular section covers civil war info. It also shows pictures of what the Tennessee River looked like before the dams were built. There is one section that explains how locks were built for navigation in early years.
Kerry has done a tremendous job with this site and there is tons of neat stuff that a lot of people are not aware of. Check it out if you have time. Be sure to check out the time line section. It will describe how Florence got its name. Places like Ditto landing are also referenced. Enjoy.
