Fished Sportsman's Park area of Elk River today. Weather was great. It was about as slow as I've ever seen on the Elk. Most of the mayflies are spent with a few of the late hatchers still trying to avoid the webs. The topwater was unusually slow, probably because the fish are stuffed. Baitfish were present in almost any place you could cast anywhere out of the current. No game fish following them, just a few shad. Gave up the fly rod about midday and switched to crickets/minnows.
About 2 dozen small bluegill
About 6 warmouth
2 nice catfish
2 or 3 1-lb bass
no luck on finding an odd crappie
Current was pretty fast and the water level was about 1.5 ft lower than ideal for finding the keeper bluegill. Pretty turbid water with visibility about 1 -1.5 ft. Water near the channel was a little cleaner, but everything else was pretty muddy.
It was a great day to be out. I am so thankful for our natural resources. Please remember to take care of them.
