I have been using portables for several years and have had good luck with the model(s) I own.

I have the Eagle Fish ID 128 and the Eagle FishEasy (basically the same model with different name).

I think these models are essentially the same as the Lowrance X22a fixed model which Alex has been using for about 8 or 9 years.

Not a lot of bells and whistles, but it does a fair job of locating fish and structure. If the 8 D cell batteries are old, it might not deliver enough power to give good detail at extreme depths, but I don't usually fish extremely deep water. Deepest I might fish would be maybe 40 or 45 feet, although I have had my boat on Smith lake in 250+ deep water and the portable performed well, at least I think it did! LOL!

Although I have had good luck with the Eagle portables, your mileage may vary. I can say that I still don't recommend ANY Humminbird products, especially the Cuda line.

Hope this helps.

Good luck and good fishin'
