Yep I am quite sure they are shellcracker. If you would like i can go catch one and email the pic. they just always seem to be pretty deep. this is the shallowest we have seen them in years. we usually catch them between 15-20' deep. We use an ultralight a spit shot and red worms. Tightline on the bottom. Sometimes we catch a channel cat that make for fun on the ultralight. Have even caught some carp that way. Sometimes people call them red ear sunfish, maybe that is what you call them.
