Sounds like you may have more recent experience than I have on the top water stripe hit. As I said, I don't get to fish below the dams as much now.
When I was a kid, I used to find schools of stripe/white bass busting shad minnows in the dead of summer. It was fun with my little 5hp Otasco motor and 12 foot flat bottom. I would get out into the middle of the river below what is now the Patton Island bridge on Pickwick and just stand up and watch for activity. When I spotted them I would rush as fast as that little motor would push me to the area and cast a silver spoon or rooster tail type spinner. Lots of fun, but I haven't done it in many years.
My fishing season is coming close to the end. I usually stick it out until the mayflies (willowflies) come out and bream fish with fly rod and keystone minnow. After that it is just too hot and too crowded for me.
Good luck and good fishin'
