The bream (bluegill and redear sunfish, i.e. shellcracker) are staging for their spawn now on Wheeler.
I have found no evidence of bedding activity by these bream, but have heard unsubstantiated reports. I doubt seriously that the bream are bedding yet. However they are staging, much like the crappie do several weeks before the spawn. I expect active bream spawning activity toward the end of this month (April) and into the first couple of weeks in May. This can continue well into June and beyond depending on water temps and other conditions.
Crappie report for Wheeler:
Although I haven't been on them, I have received reports (some from reliable sources) that the crappie have found the button bushes and other similar structured areas (1 to 3 feet of water) and are in there thick! I don't think this will be a long term situation, so get out after them ASAP!
Good luck and good fishin'
