There is a big difference in the Eagle and Lowrance units....that made me spend that extra $100. The lowrance x135 has 4000 watts peak to peak power...the eagle fishmark 480 has 1500 watts. That can be the difference in a unit being a depth finder that shows a couple fish and being a pretty decent fish finder. The less power you have (especially in murky water or water with vegetation etc) the less you will penetrate objects/plants etc in the water. If you don't have enough power to bounce the sonar signal back to the top of the water...it won't give you a reading with that section of sonar. You will never know how many fish/structure you miss by having a weak sonar unit. I talked in depth with the product specialist at Cabelas on this and did my research on the net. If you want to locate fish with it .... save up and get a nice one...if you just want depth....get a cheaper unit. Just my humble opinion.
