March/April are great months for pre-spawn and bedding bass. Lipless cranks, jerkbaits as well as top-water baits, spinnerbaits, etc are all good. A lot of the fish will be in 2 to 4 feet of water and if the weather is right, it's great fishing. A 5 or 6 inch Yum Dinger is the best bet for plastics.
I am a jig fisherman. I have the record weight weighed in on tournament scales at Lake Guntersville in 2004, (5 bass that weighed 30.39-lbs) and about all of my bigger tournament weights are caught on a jig. I've weighed in a lot of bags over 20-lbs in tournaments on a jig. The best time to learn and fish the jig is from early June through mid-August, with late June through July being really prime time. We catch a lot of bass over 6-lbs on the jig, with a usual 4-lb average during the summer months. You can catch a big fish on a jig in the spring, but it's far better in the summer. Good luck.
