You can go up the Flint all the way to Hobbs Island Road during summer pool or high water in the winter, if you pick your routes. Beware of mud flats near the power line crossing about 1.5 miles above the mouth; the channel is very narrow at this point. As for spots and smallies, don't make the trip for them on the lower Flint. Nearly all the bass that I catch on the lower Flint are largemouth, some few spots and no smallies. The smallies are generally found above Winchester Road where the river is more like a large creek.
