Bob, just like in FW fishing, you'll get the most enjoyment out of matching your tackle to the size fish you want to catch. Spinning tackle is most versitile for SW fish IMHO, but a lot of FW tackle (6# to 15# line on a 6 ft rod) can be used from the pier for smaller panfish like whiting, sheepshead, pompano, etc or jigging for spanish mackerel, bluefish and jacks (blue runner and ladyfish). IF you want to try for bigger game like bullreds, king mackerel, etc use a heavier setup (250 yards of 15#-20# line on a 7'-9' rod).
IF you've never seen how it's done, just take your time and watch how folks catch fish out there. Maybe even just walk out ($1) and watch and talk to fishermen about rigs and bait. Most are glad to share and offer advise.
