Had my first experience with Tailrace fishing on Wed 27th. Got on the water around 6:30am. On the morning bite we put 4 Stripe hybrids 7 to 10 pounds as well as 1 12 pound Striper in the boat. After the sun peeked over the dam the bite shut down and we went from chunk and winding to drifting some shad. Quality fish were few and far between between 10am to 2pm. Except for 2 Smallies around 4 or 5# apiece(released). Around 3pm some weather moved in and TVA started up #11 turbine and that kicked off the afternoon bite. Between 3 & 4 we picked up 3 more Hybrids to 9 or 10 And another 15 pound Stripe. Throw in a few white bass for good measure and we had us a mess o fish. All told the take home was as follows
2 Stripe 12-15 pounds
7 Hybrids 7-10 pounds
11 White bass keepers
1 Channel cat about 5 pounds
1 Largemouth about 2 to 3 pounds
1 Gut hooked smallie about 3/4 of an inch over keeper size.
The guy we fished with said this was an "average" day.
If you get a chance to fish the Wheeler tailrace DO IT!! You will not regret it!!
