Try cuts off of the main channel when they are generating current at Wheeler. Usually between 7 and 12 feet deep on average, but they can be deeper and shallower depending on the day. My average hasn't been any different from yours on size. The white crappie are still long and skinny and the black crappie are short and chunkier, but large ones (one pound and larger) have been exceptions.
My best method has been a slow retrieve using crappie sliders or sassy shad (shad imitations) using a count down for depth and a slow steady retrieve. The hit is still not very aggressive but that should change as the water temps cool.
