Some of the largest stripers in this state reside below Lewis Smith Dam. I know this because I have seen them in broad daylight with my own eyes. I have seen numerous fish that were close to 40 or 50 pounds. They are catchable and I know someone who has caught them. The best time to catch them is in the early spring while the turbines are running. However, it will have to be at around 2AM or 3AM. They feed only at night near the dam and at daylight find deeper pools down stream to hide out. John Eisenbarth over at Riverside Fly Shop has caught many of them near the bridge. He can provide very good insight. I also know that many fishermen have caught them with big sassy shad and live bait. However, catching them from the cat-walk at the dam would be difficult. You will want to fish from the east bank and take the dirt road from the pump house.
