If you are wanting a quality rod I like St. Croix - well made, in a number of lengths, power ratings and rod actions - actually designed for specific applications. They are less expensive than G. Loomis and some of the other top-of-the-line rods but just as durable, should last a lifetime.

In my research for fly rods and spinning rods, several websites suggested that if your budget was limited the Ugly Stick line was a good substitute for higher priced rods. For saltwater flyfishing I wound up with a beautiful, blue 9 foot St. Croix, fast action and rated for saltwater beasties up to 100 pounds.
