took some friends to pickwick to drift y'tails for stripe/smallmouth. Got there about 5am (from Grant long drive). went to barge canal looking for y'tails, took about 2 hours to get 6-7 dozen but they were big (5 inches or so). No current, we did try out in front of the dam with a couple of small whitebass/hybreds (less than 1 1/2lbs). after about 20 minutes we went right up to the generator holes in the dam. a couple of them the valve was not completely shut tight, so water was boiling out in the back. So we tossed a y'tail up in there to see if it would make it out.
We caught fish one after the other from those two holes only. if the water wasn't bubbling up there was no fish. we had several triples on at one time and uncountable doubles. We did keep some fish for a fish fry. when we ran out of y'tails we went back to barge canal to seek somemore. came home between the 3 of us with 50 stripe ( 1 3/4 lb average ) and 2 nice cats.
and those are just the ones we kept, can't count how many we put back. And all of them came from an area smaller than the average living room.
Started pulling water at around 2pm but we had to leave shortly after that. No fish on top first thing in the morning, but we sure tried.
want to go to wheeler on the 15th, any one know where to net y'tails there? Any good catches?
