By accident I caught a 16" sauger at the end of May last year. I was bass fishing on a secondary point upstream from the mouth of Town Creek in Guntersville Lake. I often catch good sized sauger below Guntersville Dam as early as September. A few years ago I was catching limits of sauger every day and then Sept. 11, 2001 came along, which made TVA restrict access to the dam for a while. I have had some success (no limits) the past couple of years, but water conditions and lake levels have a big influence on the bite in September and October. You have to experiment with techniques and presentations that go against conventional wisdom to catch them when the water is still warm. I won't give away my hard earned sauger secrets here ... but I will say that it does NOT involve a jig or a minnow.
