I haven't read much on the subject, but I do hear about bass fishermen catching very nice crappie on crank baits from time to time. The only problem I see in most of the reports is that they don't quit bass fishing and really try for the crappie when this happens.
I have never heard stories of anyone catching a LOT of crappie on crank baits, but if I caught a nice one on a crank bait, I would quickly switch to jigs and see if there were more of them in that area.
