You have the basic setup correct. You need to experiment with line size and lead weight til you get it to where your bait can get down according to the amount of current at any given time. This of course changes throughout the day. I have found that a good spinning outfit spooled with 8Lb stren will handle almost anything if your drag is set correctly. Make sure your bait is getting down almost to the bottom and if you continually hang up the back off the weight a little. The better fisherman have their bait just off the bottom in the drift. The bait needs to get down to the rocks that the fish are using for current breaks. I don't have much luck on smallies up there this time of year, but mid Sept thru mid Oct is prime time. I have wanted to try a "no-snag" type sinker in the drift but am too tight cheeked to buy them. Keep your life jacket on up in the current...........good luck
