That is the basic idea, although I am far from an
expert on it. I have never drifted with net-caught
shad, but I have tried it a couple of times with
"store bought" shiners and did OK. Never caught any big smallies--only up to about 1.5 pounds. Also caught a few stripe.
The guys who catch good ones usually know the "lanes" to drift in--but I have just pretty much let my bait go down at random and away she goes. If you can catch threadfin shad(yellowtails)
or what the locals call "crawly bottoms" that is the best bait. Have also heard about folks catching good ones trolling spoons or crankbaits
but I lost a couple of good crankbaits to the "rockfish" so I quickly gave that up!
